Our School

DSCF5817Eagle Peak Montessori School (EPMS), a public charter school in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District

Serving children through Montessori Education since 2001

Mission Statement:

The Mission of Eagle Peak Montessori School is to provide students with the opportunity to acquire an education founded on the educational philosophy of  Dr. Maria Montessori. We intend to promote an educational atmosphere that encourages socioeconomic and cultural diversity by providing all students with the opportunity to obtain a quality public education. Our aim is to equip each of our students with the skills, knowledge and values to participate meaningfully in the pluralistic world of the 21st century.

Our story:

Established in 2000 by a dedicate group of parents and Montessori educators, Eagle Peak Montessori was created to bring choice in education. With a lot of determination, research and planning Eagle Peak began its mission with 60 students and two small classrooms housed in a Concord Church.

Almost 15 years later Eagle Peak is going strong with over 225 students and over 7 classrooms on our own campus. This past March, after another round of determination, research and planning Eagle Peak’s success continues with the addition of an adolescent curriculum. Going forward the school will offer 7th and 8th grade to our students.

About Montessori Education:

Montessori represents an entirely different approach to education. It emphasizes learning through all five senses, not just through listening, watching, or reading.

Montessori education is designed to help all children reach their fullest potential. The children learn at their own, individual pace and according to their own choice of activities from hundreds of possibilities. Learning is an exciting process of discovery, leading to concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning.

Montessori classes place children in three-year age groups (3-6, 6-9, 9-12), forming communities in which the older children spontaneously share their knowledge with the younger ones. A classroom whose children have varying abilities is a community in which everyone learns from one another and everyone contributes. Moreover, multi-age grouping allows each child to find his or her own pace without feeling “ahead” or “behind” in relation to peers.

Students are typically found scattered around the classroom, working alone or with one or two others. They tend to become so involved in their work that visitors are immediately struck by the peaceful atmosphere. Students of different ages often work together on projects. Teachers can be seen working with an individual or small group to facilitate the learning process, stimulate interest or provide guidance for further research.

In addition to scoring well on standardized tests, Montessori children are ranked above average on such criteria as following directions, turning in work on time, listening attentively, using basic skills, showing responsibility, asking provocative questions, showing enthusiasm for learning, and adapting to new situations.
